Ranch Rodeo

Ryan has been wanting to compete in the Ranch Rodeo in Juab County Fair since we moved to Levan.  He finally got a team together this year.  Nate Taylor, Bodie Taylor, Jerad Housekeeper, and Ryan.  And what do you know......

THEY WON!!!!

Ryan's parents and mine came down to watch.  Thank goodness for Grandma Stewart!  She hung with Otto all night so I could take pictures, video, and watch my man compete!

 

The first competion was the bedroll race. 

Here were the rules:

Someone will be at one end of the arena holding all 4 unsaddled horse, while the other 3 team members are at the other end of the arena lying on their bedrolls, with boots off.  The whistle will blow and the 3 team members will jump up, put their boots on, and run to their horses.  Bring them back to the bedroll and saddle them.  Then they must tie the bedroll on the back of the saddle, mount, and ride around a barrel at the other end of the arena and back across to a finish line.  If the bedroll is not tied on any of the four horses the team will be penalized 15 seconds per roll on the run.

These guys were kicking some butt on this one, but poor Jerad about 20 feet from the finish line his cinch broke and he and the saddle slid off his horse.  So he had to throw it back on and ride across the finish line, but even with that I think they beat the other 3 teams they were running with because they had similar problems.

The second competition was the team mugging.

Cows will be released into the arena before the time will start.  Only one team member will be mounted on horseback, and the other team members will be muggers in the arena.  When the time starts the mounted cowboy must sort out and rope the animal according to the color/number called out by the judges.  The cows in the arena will be marked with different colors/numbers.  Once the animal is caught the muggers must tie three of the legs together.  The time will stop when the legs are tied and all team members raise their hands in the air.  the cow must remain tied for six seconds.  (If the cow gets untied before the six seconds, or stands up the team will get an added 30 secons to their time.) The muggers may assist the roper at any time throughout the run.  There will be no steer tripping allowed.  There will be a four minute time limit for this event.  If the team cannot complete this event in less than four minutes they will recieve 240 seconds added to their time.

Their time for this was 1:00 min flat.

Third was the Donkey Roping

2 Ropers, 2 Herders

Riders will start in bucking chute on donkeys.  Herder will open chute gate on "go" Ropers will rope steer, must be a legal head catch.  Herder can assist the roper but cannot rope steer.  There is a two kinute time limit for each roper.  Time will stop when a legal head catch is made.  Thirty seconds will be deducted for each legal catch.  If no catches are made within the two minute time limit the team will receive a time of 4 min.  (Two minutes per roper)  No halter or saddles are used on donkeys.  You must provide you own rope.  If an illegal catch is made the herder may take rope off and give back to roper. 

Bodie and Nate were one team. And Ryan and Jerad were the other.  Ryan ran up and down the arena a couple times trying to herd a steer Jerad's way.  But they never caught one.  I believe Nate was the only one in the whole competition to catch one.

Last was the wild cow ride...Ryan rode the cow.

Cow will be saddled and haltered in chute.  Own saddle and halter will be used.  All cows will be turned out at the same time.  One person will ride the cow and the other three will hold lead rope.  Cow must be rode accross finish line on the other side of the arena.  Once across the finish line the people on the ground will stop cow and rider must unsaddle cow, saddle must be brought back to chute, then all team members must run back and touch chute.  Time will stop when all members are touching the chute.  Fastest time wins.

Ryan was so worn out from chasing a cow up and down the arena for the Donkey roping.  He ran out of steam carrying the saddle back and Nate came and helped him.

Then they called for the winners to come down for their buckles!!!
